The only California member of the family and not a true pompano. Length to four feet and weight to 80 pounds, but specimens of as much as 60 pounds are rare and the usual commercial sizes run 15 to 20 pounds. The spawning season apparently centers in the spring, with the major spawning grounds well off the Southern California and northern Baja California coasts. The Red Snapper feed on crab, shrimp, fish and worms. They can be found on rocky bottoms, reefs, and drop off walls in water over 60 feet deep. The Cero can be identified by it's long lateral stripe.
